Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes

Lisa Nicole Lopes

1971-2002

Left Eye: 5/27/71 Philadelphia, PA

As you already probably know Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes was killed in a car accident in Honduras while on vacation. Police in Honduras say Lopes lost control of the rental car she was driving. The car rolled, and her publicist says Lopes was killed instantly. The other people in the car were taken to a hospital. The crash happened near Jutiapa, 150 miles north of Tegucigalpa, the Honduran capital.

The TLC trio, was discovered by singer/producer Pebbles.Their 1992 debut, Oooooooohhh! On The TLC Tip, featured the sassy ladies wearing gaudy garb covered with condoms, and yielded the smash hits "Ain't Too Proud To Beg," "Baby, Baby, Baby" and "What About Your Friends." The album sold three million copies and paved the way for TLC's 1994 follow-up, the astronomically successful CrazySexyCool. Propelled by the hits "Creep," "Red Light Special," and, of course, the crossover smash "Waterfalls," CrazySexyCool nabbed two Grammy Awards in 1995.

FanMail closed the five-year gap since the 1994 release CrazySexyCool. While keeping the trio's signature bravado intact, the album also introduces a more introspective TLC: On "My Life," they deal with the challenges of celebrity, while the very pretty "Unpretty" is about beauty myths and self esteem.

Lopes took the UK by storm when she was invited to host the 2000 Music of Black Origin Awards (Mobo) in London with BBC Radio 1 DJ Trevor Nelson.

"She was the 'crazy' in Crazy Sexy Cool and I had the privilege of presenting the Mobos with her a couple of years ago which was great fun."

"Waterfalls will forever be an R&B classic."

Ms King put Lopes' popularity down to the fact she had the image of standing up to the recording establishment and speaking her mind, becoming an inspiration for her young fans.

"She was a gifted, talented artist with a colourful style and personality that will be remembered forever," she added.

"We had all grown up together and were as close as a family. Today we have truly lost our sister," Lopes' TLC partners Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins and Rozonda "Chilli" Thomas said in a statement. Friday afternoon (April 26) on MTV's "TRL," the audibly distraught ladies phoned in, saying, "Lisa had one of the biggest hearts of anybody we've ever known. She did charity work with kids for the lupus disease. She adopted a little girl named Snow. ... Lisa could do anything she put her mind to."
